How to determine a good MTU value?

My ping is good but I occasionally getting ping spikes. Maybe MTU is the culprit? Tried 1450 and 600, no difference.

Also, it says the lowest MTU value that can be set is 576, yet I can’t put it below 600.

EDIT: Got this error:

[90.177644] re468: MUDEC_00262: ODR_sendto() error to 51.116.177.233: Message too long. Check your path MTU. (curmtu 1450 buflen 1478)
